Don’t Fight it Alone
Design Thesis, Print, 2016
The poster series, Don’t Fight it Alone, was a thesis project I produced at Umass Dartmouth that aimed to raise awareness about depression and suicide prevention by addressing common misconceptions about how mental illness appeared outwardly. The posters feature a mix of bold typography, striking imagery, and insightful statistics to help spark a dialogue about mental health.
The goal of these designs were to visually convey the internal dialogue that people suffering from depression reportedly experience, and juxtapose it with contrasting expressions and quotes. The choice to have the type inscribed on the skin of the subjects was to bring these feelings to the surface and show them to the world, despite their attempts to mask them.
The quotes are intented to tackle the misconceptions of how the mental illness is perceived and the statistics show the reader how widespread it’s affect on the American population is. The hotline numbers for the National Alliance of Mental Health and National Suicide Prevention are provided for the reader so they may call or save the number for a later time.
Overall, the poster series aims to make those suffering from depression feel seen, while also providing resources and support.
